More Details for the Techno-Curious
Subscribing to the podcast is easy. These Podcast are syndicated using RSS. RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication, is made up of XML, and is used to “publish” or “feed” content so that software or online services called “podcatchers” can automatically tell when there is new content, and automatically download that content onto your computer or mobile device. These publish points are called “feeds”. Popular Services and Apps include Apple Podcasts, Stitcher Radio, Spotify Podcasts, Amazon Music Podcasts, and YouTube Music Podcasts. There are also dedicated mobile apps like Pocket Casts and the Apple Podcasts app. There are many, many more…but these are some of the popular ones.
To get your chosen podcast app to “subscribe” to the Student Pilot Cast, you can usually just look it up in the app or service and choose “Subscribe” or “Follow” or something like that. It’s free, and will keep you up to date on the latest episodes. You will usually have options like automatically downloading the latest episode or options around arranging playlists, etc. If, for whatever reason you can’t find the podcast by searching or browsing in their catalog, you can easily add it by pasting the RSS feed address into the app. The RSS feed or web address for a podcast is just a URL that points to the XML that describes the feed. We have consolidated all of our audio content into one feed at this time. The audio only feed is here. We are no longer maintaining an RSS feed for the video episodes. Video podcasts through podcast apps are not used very much, and the quality has to be compromised to keep the file sizes lower, so we’ve found it more manageable and better quality to just use the YouTube podcast features (which essentially allow us to make a playlist). The video only feed on YouTube is here. These links can also be found in the right navigation pane of this site and are identified with orange “RSS” symbols under the “Podcast Feeds” heading near the top.
Please keep in mind that the audio podcasts are NOT the same content as the video podcasts, so if you want all the content, please subscribe to both (subscribe on YouTube to the videos). They sometimes cover different things, not just different formats of the same content. The audio feed is more tied to the student experience, in cockpit training, with a few features and special events. The video feed includes in-cockpit video sometimes, but is more feature oriented and does not typically coincide as closely with the training. There is also far less video content at the moment as we focus mostly on audio.
