Hey…look at this. Finally a video episode! It’s been a long time coming, I know. I hope you enjoy it.
There are some problems with the video which I explain a bit about in this episode, but I decided to use some of the video anyway as I think it will still be interesting. Also, I rendered this mp4 video at 320×240 pixels to save space. This should work well on most portable video players…but won’t look quite as good viewing on a computer of TV screen. I do have a standard definition version (640×480), but it is a whopping 227 MB as opposed to 94 MB, so I went with the smaller one. Please let me know if you would prefer the larger, clearer versions of this and future video podcasts or the smaller ones that I’m releasing. Based partially on this feedback, I will make future decisions on the rendering of future videos (and may even change this one).
In this video I show some of the flight that I talked about in the audio episode 10, “Sometime You Just Feel Like a Pilot”. All of the commentary and insight about the flight is in the audio cast; this video is simply a compilation of parts of that flight for your viewing pleasure. The main discussions still happen in the audiocast…so simply put, the video is not a replacement for the audio…they are for different purposes.
Thanks again for listening and watching. Please let me know what you think of the video. The quality will be better next time…but feel free to comment on the content, length, flow, etc., so I can try to make my next one even better.

Howdy Bill!
I just found your podcast. I saw that Will Hawkins was enjoying an episode of it, so I did a search, subscribed, and now I’m going through all of the backissues to get up to date as quickly as possible.
I would like to say that I personally do not mind the larger downloads. I am subscribed to another podcast that uses very good video quality, and each 15- to 25-minute episode is typcally over 200 megabytes. I don’t know what that would do to your hosting fees, but since I normally watch vidcasts on my computer screen ot TV set while eating breakfast in the morning (as opposed to audiocasts when I’m commuting or exercising), having some higher quality is nice. I am not opposed to bigger downloads.
Keep up the great work, keep the content coming, and keep including that cockpit audio and video! Because after all, you’re gonna be a pilot!
I’d like to see some commentary on the cost of becomming a pilot…maybe a blog post about the overall costs to this point. or perhaps on each episode/flight you take outline the “lesson cost” for that segment. it would be interesting to see not only the $ cost but the time cost you’ve invested so far as well.
Tim…somehow I missed your comment. Hmmm, what a topic…the cost. It’s something nobody really talks about much because its too depressing. 🙂 Seriously, though…that’s not a bad idea. The problem is that it is so locally oriented, and so tied to the CFI/Flight School chosen, the equipment being used, and how many hours it takes an individual to train…a general topic of cost would be somewhat unhelpful for most people.
I will, however, do an episode on what the costs are (not necessarily how much each thing costs), and what to expect…that’s a great idea. Maybe that episode could be a springboard in the comments section for others to chime in on their thoughts and experiences as well.
I really enjoyed the video, how did you mount the flip camera? Did you patch the audio through the camera as well?
Bailey, I had a suction mount this time for the flip, if I recall. I’ve since tried many, many methods for mounting cameras. The biggest problem in an airplane seems to be vibration. The audio was not recorded through the camera. I record my flights using an audio recorder, so I edited the audio to go with the video in “post”. Here is a post and video on recording audio that I did a while back: https://studentpilotcast.com/spc/2009/08/spc-video-005-recording-cockpit-audio/
Glad you enjoyed the video.
